Goodbye Panther - Hello Tiger!

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger

Tiger just arrived and I am about to begin the upgrade process on both my iMac and PowerBook. Earlier this morning I made some backups of all of my important files as I’m going to select the option to do a clean install to give it a fresh start. I will post an update once everything has been completed and I’ve given it some good tests.

An Open Letter to Technion Communications

Dear Evil Telemarketers,

Why do your phone bots keep calling my house every weekday at exactly 12:23 PM? I have filed several complaints about you with the Federal Trade Commission since my phone number has been on the National Do Not Call Registry since February 20, 2004. I have also tried submitting my number to your own Do Not Call form which low-and-behold does not work since your idiotic webmaster used a plain button instead of a submit button. After Googling your phone number, which shows up on my caller ID, I discovered many other innocent victims that you have been irritating on a daily basis. This has got to stop at once. I can only hope that my complaints to the FTC will serve you justice!

Sincerely,

Jeff Miller

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger

Apple announced the other day that the release date for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger will be on April 29th. They just added a page on their site that lists over 200 new features that are included. WoW! Here’s a couple that I am really looking forward to:

  • Spotlight - A new desktop search technology that finds anything (files, emails, contacts, images, movies, songs, calendars and applications, etc.) on your computer as fast as you can type. No more waiting and waiting when performing searches!
  • Dashboard - Similar to Konfabulator which enables you to have nifty new mini-applications called widgets so you can quickly view stock prices, local weather, lookup numbers with the phone book, etc.
  • Automater - An innovative personal automation assistant that helps you streamline repetitive manual tasks without programming such as renaming files or folders or attach files to multiple emails and automatically send them out.

Even though it isn’t due out for another two weeks, it is already the #1 seller on Amazon.com’s Software Top Seller List. They are currently offering free shipping and a mail-in rebate for the $129.99 Tiger retail box which brings the final cost down to only $94.99. I went ahead and pre-ordered it and cannot wait for it to get here!

May 1st CSS Reboot

May 1st CSS Reboot

I’ve decided to participate in this year’s May 1st Reboot and also the May 1st CSS Reboot. It’s been almost a year since I started the site and it’s time for a fresh look. In case you’re not familiar with the May 1st Reboot, it is a yearly relaunch of websites with new designs and is currently in it’s 5th year. The main problem with it though is that most of the entries are created with Flash. For this reason a new site has been started this year called CSS Reboot that is independently run.

The May 1st Reboot is a community project that brings together web professionals from all over and encourages them to collectively launch redesigns of their sites on May 1st. The only problem is the entries are all extremely Flash heavy. Sure, Flash has its place but where’s the CSS and web standards representation?

So this year CSS Reboot will attempt to bring together web professionals who design with CSS and standards in mind to launch their redesigns on May 1st along with all the Flash designers. This way we can both participate and show everyone just how great semantic, accessible design can be.

It’s going to be tough to make the deadline as it is just over two weeks away. Looks like I’m going to have to find some time to start coding!

Dogfish Head’s 90-Minute IPA Wins Battle of the Beers 2005

Battle of the Beers 2005

My favorite beer, Dogfish Head 90-Minute IPA, has just won RealBeer.com’s Battle of the Beers 2005 for the third consecutive year with over 2,700 votes! The tournament is set up similar to NCAA Basketball’s March Madness, except they call it Märzen Madness. RealBeer.com has held the tournament since 2002 where visitors select which beer they would rather drink. It starts off with 64 different American beers that are chosen by users of RealBeer.com and only one beer per brewery is entered. The beers are paired up that are vaguely alike then they are broken down into four groups of 16. Each time a beer wins it moves to a higher bracket. It started on March 1st and the winner is crowned champion coincidentally the same day the NCAA men’s championship game is played. Way to go Dogfish!

Logitech MX1000 Laser Mouse

Logitech MX1000 Laser Mouse

Over the years I’ve used a lot of different computer mice and have never really been completely satisified with any that I’ve used until now. About two weeks ago my Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer stopped working so I had to find a replacement. I decided to order the Logitech MX1000 Laser Cordless Mouse mainly because it has a laser instead of an optical sensor which means much more precise tracking. Here’s a list of features that it has which really make it stand out among other mice:

  • Logitech MX Laser Engine - The world’s first laser mouse making optical mice obsolete. This makes it 20 times more sensitive to surface detail and also so it will work on glass and polished wood-grained surfaces without requiring a mousepad.
  • Lithium-Ion Battery - Say goodbye to AA batteries and say hello to a battery that never needs replacing.
  • Illuminated 4-level Battery Indicator - Easily tell when the battery is about to die so you can charge it before it runs out of juice.
  • Rapid-Charging Base Station - A slick looking recharging station makes it so you don’t have have to worry about plugging in any wires to recharge it. Just set it on top of the stand and it will start charging.
  • Superior Grasp - Perfectly contoured to the shape of your hand…not too big nor too small.
  • Application Switch - A button in between the forward/back buttons that opens a window of the programs that are running so you can quickly change over to a different application.

I have been happy thus far and am very impressed with this mouse. If you’re not pleased with your current mouse I highly recommend picking one up as you will not be disappointed. It is compatable on both Windows and Mac platforms. It retails for $79.95 but I was able to find it on Buy.com for only $54.97 shipped!
